Initialement composées pour piano and violoncelle en 1941, les 13 brèves variations se présentent maintenant dans un arrangement pour basson et orchestre de chambre. Dans cette pièce, Paul Hindemith a mis en musique une chanson enfantine ancienne anglaise connue sur le mariage entre une grenouille et une souris. Chacune des variations joyeuses de style classique est attribuée à un distique de la chanson.
