Clair-Obscur Saxophonquartett

À propos de Clair-Obscur Saxophonquartett

Since the time of the Renaissance, the term clair-obscur has been used to describe the use of extreme contrasts of light and dark in works of art in order to achieve a dramatic intensification of expression. The greatest possible range of expression has also been the goal of the four members of the saxophone quartet clair-obscur since the group was founded more than 15 years ago.

At the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin, the players studied chamber music with their mentor, Friedemann Weigle of the Artemis Quartet, acquiring the skills to explore the full musical potential of this instrumental grouping. The repertoire of clair-obscur is seemingly unlimited, and the group is eager to explore new possibilities beyond the original literature for saxophone quartet. In sometimes daring arrangements, they perform string quartets and piano music, using their instruments to bring the sound colors of a large symphony orchestra to life.

In addition to chamber music, the members of clair-obscur also appear as soloists in original solo concertos for saxophone quartet and orchestra. They have created and produced a number of theater productions, participating both as musicians and actors. The members of the group regularly perform with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the MDR Symphony Orchestra, and the Staatskapelle Berlin. They also pass on their knowledge and experience to the next generation in courses and master classes at various music schools and universities.

Clair-obscur has performed in New York’s Carnegie Hall and Berlin’s Philharmonie, as well as at the Lucerne Festival. The diversity of the group’s repertoire is reflected in their numerous recordings: in addition to five chamber music CDs with works ranging from the Baroque period to New Music, there is a CD featuring saxophone quartet and symphony orchestra, an audio book with the actor Boris Aljinovic, a children’s book and CD with a text by Wolfram Berger, and a CD with saxophone quartet and wind ensemble.
