Guitarist Jürgen Ruck was born in Freiburg (Germany). He studied in Freiburg with Sonja Prunnbauer and in Basel with Oscar Ghiglia. In 1986, he won first prize in the German national music competition “Deutscher Musikwettbewerb” and in 1990 was awarded the “International Kranichstein Prize” for the interpretation of New Music. Jürgen Ruck’s repertoire consists of music from the 16th century to the present day. He performs in a wide variety of chamber music combinations and has given concerts in many international festivals. He has appeared as a soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Intercontemporain Paris, Phace|contemporary music Vienna, the German radio orchestras in Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg, and Saarbrücken, the RAI Orchestra in Milan, and the ORF Orchestra in Vienna.

Jürgen Ruck is especially interested in the music of our time; he is the guitarist of Ensemble Modern, and has collaborated with important composers such as György Kurtág, Hans Werner Henze, Helmut Lachenmann, and John Adams. Hans Werner Henze’s important contributions to the repertoire for guitar are a central part of Ruck’s work. His recording with Elena Càsoli of Henze’s compositions for two guitars was awarded an “Echo Klassik” prize in 2000 as “Solo Recording of the Year for 20th Century Music.” Jürgen Ruck teaches guitar at the University for Music in Würzburg.
