The cellist Mathis Mayr, born in 1972, is a member of ensemble mosaik since 2008. His main focus is in new and improvised music, with a special interest in microtonality and traditional folk music. He also plays oud, viella and viola da gamba in various musical contexts from electronic experimental rock music to historical performance practice.

He formed the band Pain Perdu together with Sebo Flaig (percussion) and Bastian Duncker (Sax/ Ney); the name of their first album, recorded by sound producer Sebastian Schottke, is Brandströmer. He plays chamber music regularly with Antonis Anissegos (piano), the EMP-String Quartet, the Synth-Krautrock legend Jochen Irmler, the composers Carl Friedrich Oesterhelt and Richard van Schoor, Jongsuk Kim (piano) and as a trio with Ernst Surberg and Liping Ting (performance, vocalization). With ensemble mosaik he performed at many international festivals and recorded many radio broadcasts and CDs, including Enno Poppe’s Rundfunk.
