Description
Will Eisenmann based his second opera Bethsabé on the stage play by André Gide in 1912. Bathsheba was the wife of the military captain Uriah who was in the service of King David and stationed before the gates of Rabbah. David observed Bathsheba in her bath, promptly fell in love and committed adultery with her. On his command, her husband was maliciously murdered during battle. Yaweh punished this crime through the death of the firstborn child of David and Bathsheba.
Eisenmann considered himself as a Romantic composer following in the footsteps of Ravel, Dukas and Debussy; his musical language is characterised by rhythmic and motivic complexity and extreme tonal density. Bethsabé is the only one of Eisenmann’s three operas yet to have received a staging.
