Die Oper GEGEN DIE WAND, nach dem gleichnamigen Film von Fatih Akin, ist eine deutschtürkische Liebesgeschichte. Sie enthält sowohl türkische Textteile als auch in das Orchester integrierte türkische Instrumente. Die Uraufführung, an der ein Extrachor von deutschen und deutschtürkischen Schülern mitwirken wird, findet am 28. November 2008 am Theater Bremen statt; eine erweiterte Fassung ist für den Sommer 2010 an der Staatsoper Stuttgart vorgesehen. Vom Bremer Theater als "absoluter Höhepunkt der Saison" angekündigt.

Description

The opera Gegen die Wand is based on the award-winning film of the same name by Fatih Akin which had been a great success in the European cinema in 2004 and had sparked lively controversy.
The opera tells the story of the young German Turks Sibel and Cahit. Sibel enters into a sham marriage with Cahit to escape the narrow morality of her family. Her appetite for life and love plunges her into numerous affairs. But Cahit becomes aware that he has actually fallen in love with his sham wife. In the heat of the moment, he kills one of her ex-lovers. Sibel, for her part, realizes that she too has fallen in love with Cahit and promises to wait for him while he is in prison. But she fails to keep her promise and starts a new life in Istanbul.
The music written by the composer Ludger Vollmer for this story is energetic and emotional, its specific feature being that it uses not only classical orchestral instruments but also traditional Turkish instruments which give the music a foreign, yet characteristic sound that is appropriate to the subject.
