This is the first time that it has been tried to put the history of music education, seen from a perspective relating to cultural history as well as to the history of ideas, into a time frame of more than 3,000 years. This is associated with the claim to paint a picture which does not begin around 800 or not even before 1800, as has been the case up to now. Musical 'world views' have influenced entire nations, periods of history and cultural areas, affecting even their political structure: Music has 'educated' in the original sense of the word. The reader is introduced to 40 stages in our cultural and educational history: from antiquity to the present time.
