A real stroke of luck – a virtuosic mixture of Jazz, Musica Brasileira, Zydeco, Electronic and "Folklore Imaginaire"

Heinrich von Kalnein, Gregor Hilbe and Christian Bakanic are three musicians from different backgrounds and generations; all three with a similar talent and experience to personally invent music and play their own pieces with extraordinary talent and expression.

How did they come together and why this unusual cast?
Kalnein explains: "On one hand, after several years of intensive work with JBBG - Jazz Bigband Graz, I got excited by the idea of playing again in a chamber music setting. I wanted to have more room for my own ideas on stage. On the other hand, I knew that with an unusual cast I would have a usable outline for a Band sound."

He also achieved great success with KAHIBA: he brought Christian Bakanic onboard the Band, an accordion player and one of the most interesting young talents on the Austrian scene. The fact, that during the production Bakanic also turned out to be an outstanding pianist was just a stroke of luck. "I have already known, as a consequence of his work with the young Austrian band 'Beefolk' that Christian was a virtuosic accordion player. I got astonished when Christian, at our first rehearsal started to play the grand piano", laughs Kalnein. "So when he offered to play the percussion, regretfully, I had to decline, because I have already had the sound of Gregor Hilbe in mind. I have known Gregor for ages; and it was also clear to me, from our recent joint Album with JBBG 'Electric Poetry & Lo-Fi Cookies', what I wanted to achieve with him!".

You can hear the results of months of composition and sample work: KAHIBA succeeds with "Global Dialects", a convincing balancing act between emotional approachability of musical virtuosity and composer’s sophistication.

Why no bass?
Kalnein explains: "I am sorry for the bass burdensomeness of our time! When every second passing car is mutating into a bass drum, I think it is time to find a new sound, isn’t it? What is more, this almost chamber ensemble sound offers a basic approach to inherent reception of music, and I liked that!" 'Bailando' and 'Early Morning Tea' are good examples of this ease of playing.
Furthermore, the three developed an intelligent new method of creating compositions by using Live-Electronics, as the loop-based compositions 'Horizonte'‚ 'Fellini', or 'Lazy' reveal. Gregor explains: "I have been doing it for so many years now! When I was in Paris and London, even if the Jazz fraction was not happy with this, I spent more time in Electro-Temples than in the jazz circuit. If I combine both these elements live, I still sweat blood sometimes", he laughs.

The Three
Heinrich von Kalnein, the German saxophonist and flutist, who lived for over 25 years in Austria, has been long recognised as a soloist and a bandleader on an international scale. In the 90s he achieved great success all over Europe with his Group (i.a. with the guitarist Nguyén Lé) as well as with Indo-Jazz Worldmusic Project; the "Free Winds". There were also concert tours in Russia, USA, Mexico, Brazil, India and Sri Lanka. In 2008, together with his JBBG – jazz big band graz and his current Album "Electric Poetry" (Intuition), he created a sensation all over Europe. He penned most of the compositions.
The Swiss drummer and sound designer Gregor Hilbe was – just as Kalnein – a member of Vienna Art Orchestra, and has worked on the Electronic Scene in Paris and London for many years. Together with John Silverman, the American bass player and Austrian woodwind player Gerald Preinfalk he led the "République Électrique" Trio. He went on a worldwide tour with singer/songwriter Juana Molina and his own "BOWW" project, as well as with the ensembles "Tangocrash", Kaspar Ewald’s "Exorbitantem Kabinett" and the "JBBG - jazz bigband graz".
Newcomer Christian Bakanic has become rapidly famous as a member of the Austrian band "Beefolk" and "Folksmilch" and apart from his passion for jazz and music of the Balkans, he also has a marked weakness for the Argentinean Tango. He is a great virtuoso and an excellent composer as well.

In Sanskrit, Kahiba means "we shall speak"; and this is also what Kalnein, Hilbe and Bakanic do in KAHIBA – with their very own music – and a global dialect, understood by all cultures.
