Das Stück ist viersätzig angelegt, alle Sätze gehen attacca ineinander über. Zu Beginn steht ein Variationssatz, dessen Thema „Molto tranquillo“ das motivische Material des ganzen Konzerts vorgibt. In zunehmender Steigerung aller Parameter entwickeln sich vier Variationen hin zum sehr lebhaften, scherzoartigen zweiten Satz „Agitatissimo possibile“ der in der Mitte durch einen auf die Variationen des ersten Satzes rekurrierenden Abschnitt „Calmo“ unterbrochen wird. Die virtuos gesteigerte und variierte Reprise des A-Teils leitet mit einer kurzen Coda direkt in den weiträumigen langsamen dritten Satz „Adagio con gran espressione“ über. Dieser ist wiederum ein Variationssatz – eine Passacaglia über ein achttaktiges harmonisches Grundmuster, das ebenfalls aus dem Anfangsthema des Stückes entwickelt ist. Auch der vierte Satz „Allegretto animato“ ist vom Prinzip der Variation bestimmt. Es handelt sich um eine freie Rondoform, bei der das Thema ebenso wie die dazwischen integrierten Abschnitte ständiger Verwandlung und Veränderung unterworfen sind. Stefan Heucke

Description
This work is in four movements which all follow on from each other attacca. The first movement is a set of variations whose theme ’Molto tranquillo’ provides the motivic material for the entire work. Four variations ensue displaying the intensification of all parameters and this subsequently leads into the second movement, an extremely lively scherzo ’Agitatissimo possibile’ which is interrupted in mid-movement by a recurring section ’Calmo’, harking back to the variations of the first movement. The heightened and varied virtuosity in the recapitulation of the A section leads with a brief coda directly into the expansive slow third movement ’Adagio con gran espressione’. This is also a set of variations – a passacaglia on an eight-bar harmonic pattern which is also developed from the initial theme of the work. The fourth movement ’Allegretto animato’ in free rondo form is in principle also shaped by variation; the theme and interspersed episodes are subjected to constant transformation and alteration.
