An ironic look at what surrounds us often is the starting point for Annesley Black's musical compositions. Sports is a theme which the composer knows to combine with music in an unusual way, as in “Smooche de la Rooche II”. The sound material of this composition consists of the jumping and swinging noises created by skipping, among others. In addition, Black's works are characterized by a kind of “subtle sense of humour” in totally different ways: In “tender pink descender”, for example, the two double-bass clarinets try to spiral upward to increasing heights with their bass sounds; another example is “aorko” in which the violist forms a string quartet with three loudspeakers.
A novelty in the “Edition Zeitgenössische Musik” series: For the first time, an additional DVD, “This Feels Great”, is released with computer games developed specifically for this CD. Apart from the audible part, other central elements in Black's works are examined as well: the interaction of image and sound and the method of composition often based on playful structures. The titles contained on the CD were turned into images and games by the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. Excerpts from the pieces sound in objects and events which can be manipulated interactively by the player.
