Description
The repertoire on this CD extends broadly – in terms of style, genre, and chronology – across the compositional output of Igor Stravinsky. Spanning from his most celebrated score for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, "Le Sacre du printemps" (1913), through the neo-classical Concerto en mi bémol “Dumbarton Oaks” (1938), up to the serial "Movements" (1959), the selection testifies to the enormous richness and variety of his artistic legacy. This diverse repertoire is presented here by Helena Bugallo and Amy Williams, however, from a unifying viewpoint: the “black and white” perspective of arrangements for piano duet or two pianos that the composer himself made.
The international press celebrates the Nancarrow CD (WER 66702) by the Bugallo-Williams Piano Duo:
“This is a sensational recording debut for the Bugallo-Williams duo. I can’t wait to find out what’s next.”(Ian Quinn: American Record Guide)
“Listening to, say, Study for Player Piano 3B, with its biting but iridescent bluesy complexity, you start to feel this kind of music is what the piano duo medium was invented for.” (Paul Driver: The Sunday Times)
“Bugallo and Williams display superhuman control in its conflicting rhythms, while also managing to realise the humour of the music.” (Martin Anderson: International Piano)
“This wonderfully affirmative music not only questions conventional notions about rhythm but provides a uniquely exhilarating experience for the listener – well recorded and really attractive in every way. Some of the most exhilarating keyboard music from the entire 20th century.” (Peter Dickinson: Gramophone, Critics’ Choice)
